A big thank you

Thank you to Lisa's Guiding Illustrations and Girlguiding Cymru for the uniform illustrations featured in this resource.

Activity Description

Guided by Design is a creative fashion challenge where girls step into the role of designers and explore how uniforms reflect identity, values, culture, and change. Leaders can choose between two pathways Guiding Around the World or Guiding Through the Ages, before girls take on a design challenge to create a brand-new uniform.

You Will Need

  • Worksheets

  • Pens/Pencils

  • Glue

  • Scissors

  • Recycling (Optional)

Choose your challenge

🌍 Option 1: Around the World 🌍

Girls explore Guiding uniforms from different countries, linking the country, uniform, and values. This activity focuses on global diversity, culture, and how climate and lifestyle influenced design.

🕰️ Option 2: Through the Ages 🕰️

Girls build a Guiding timeline, linking decades, uniforms, and Promise/badge designs. This activity explores how Guiding has changed over time and what has stayed the same.

How to Play

1. Introduce the challenge - Split into small teams and introduce the challenge: explain that today, the girls are becoming fashion designers and will explore how uniforms reflect people, place, and purpose.

2. Run your chosen starter - Use either Around the World or Through the Ages puzzles. Ask groups to match the pieces and discuss what they notice. This can be differentiated to only matching 2 pieces rather than 4 if needed!

3. Set the design brief - Explain the task: design a new Guiding uniform that is practical, comfortable, inclusive, and suitable for its context. This may be a uniform for a different country, or a uniform for 100 years in the future

4. (Optional) Trash Fashion - Take the challenge further, turning your designs into life-size mockups using recycled materials such as bin bags, cardboard, strin,g etc.

5. Share and celebrate - Finish with a mini catwalk or group presentation, dragon's den style.

Keeping the Adventure Alive

At Hummingbird HQ, the goal is to keep resources free, accessible and available to leaders nationwide after a challenging period for my own unit, when rising costs and uncertainty around meeting spaces made it clear how fragile access to guiding activities can be. That experience shaped a commitment to sharing resources openly so that more leaders can be supported without added cost or barriers. Every donation, big or small, helps keep Hummingbird HQ running and enables the creation and sharing of new, free resources with leaders everywhere.

Donations are handled through Ko-fi, a safe and trusted platform for supporting creators. You can donate quickly and securely via PayPal or card, with no account needed.
